Gehret qualifies for NCAAs in 400

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Casimir Loxsom and sophomores Brady Gehret, an Altoona graduate, and Rebekka Simko advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month, thanks to qualifying efforts in the quarterfinal rounds, Friday at the NCAA Eastern Preliminary at Hodges Stadium.

The Nittany Lions are developing quite a travel roster for the NCAA Finals, with sophomores Will Barr, and Laura Loht and freshman Lauren Kenney all earning bids to Des Moines during competition on Thursday.

Loxsom turned on the jets in the final 200-meters of his 800-meter quarterfinal, running away with the heat victory in 1:47.69 - the second-fastest performance in qualifying. The junior, who placed fourth in the event at NCAAs a year ago, has now guaranteed his third-straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and his sixth NCAA appearance overall.

Gehret easily qualified through in the 400 meters, sprinting to a time of 45.56 to take place second in his section, and third overall. He already has a pair of NCAA appearances under his belt, including a third-place finish in the 400 at the NCAA Indoor Championships as a freshman.

Altoona Teener Minor

Troy Livermore had three hits, including two triples, and two RBIs to lead Juniata Civics to a 16-6 win over Altoona Lions in an Altoona Teener Major game in six innings Saturday morning at Seitz Field.

Juniata Civics' Evan Lingafelt and Andrew Berger had two hits apiece. Mike Weston had three hits for Altoona Lions.

n Tanner Snyder drove in five runs, and Dalton Wilt had four RBIs to lift undefeated Teeter Group past American Family Chiropractic, 14-8, in an Altoona Teener Major League game at Seitz Field.

Jacob Mellott doubled and drove in three runs for AFC.

Teeter Group is 10-0.

Iuzzolino to speak at luncheon

The Marauder Club spring luncheon has been set for Friday, June 8, in the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School student union.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon starting at noon. The luncheon's guest speaker is Mike Iuzzolino.

Iuzzolino, a graduate of Altoona Area High School, was a member of Bishop Guilfoyle's boys basketball program during the 1982 through '84 seasons. He spent two years at Penn State before transferring to St. Francis, where he averaged more than 21 points per game as a junior and 24 points per game as a senior.

Iuzzolino was selected 35th overall in the 1991 NBA draft and played two years with the Dallas Mavericks before spending three seasons in the Contintental Basketball Association and eight seasons playing in Europe.

He was a two-time Academic All-American at St. Francis and was selected the nation's Academic All-American of the Year in 1991.

Iuzzolino is currently the associate head coach of the men's basketball team at St. Vincent's College.

Other planned events at the luncheon include the introduction of BG's new athletic director and new basketball coach Chris Drenning.
