Corbett, legislators should be ashamed

May 22, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

Our governor, Tom Corbett, sold us out.

He dragged his feet for over a year before enacting a fee [a tax by any other name] on his sponsors in the Marcellus Shale Industry.

This cost Pennsylvania taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. And when a "fee" was finally initiated, it was only 1.5 percent - the lowest and most favorable to the industry in the nation. How many billions of dollars will this cost us taxpayers in the future?

Now Corbett said he has no money for social programs or education. No wonder.

He sacrificed our elderly, our disadvantaged, our environment and our schoolchildren on the altar of campaign contributions of over one million dollars.

He protected and helped his rich friends while at the same time slashing funding for those that need it most and are most unable to defend themselves.

I don't know how he can look in the mirror knowing that his budget cuts are hurting the blind, the mentally ill, our special needs children, and our oldest and youngest most vulnerable citizens.

Of course, none of these cuts affect our illustrious governor, or, for that matter, any of our "public servants" who advocated and approved these unnecessary and heartless reductions in budget. Our legislators also should be ashamed of themselves.

They keep telling us we have to sacrifice, but what sacrifices have they made? When are they going to feel any of the pain that they inflict upon the citizens of Pennsylvania?

Don Sheridan, Cresson
