Nadolsky, Gehret earn Penn Relays victory

Aaron Nadolsky and Brady Gehret, both Altoona graduates, were part of the winning men's sprint relay team at the Penn Relays while competing for the Penn State track and field team Friday.

Gehret ran a split of 45.6 on his 400-meter carry. It was the second straight year Nadolsky and Gehret were part of the winning team in the event.

The foursome finished with a time of 3:18.47.

Central Cambria graduate Carly Seymour competed in the Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor track and field championships for Duke.

Seymour took home a bronze in the 10,000-meter race and earned All-ACC honors.

Miranda Merilli, a Bishop Guilfoyle graduate, was named Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Week as well as ECAC Pitcher of the Week for the entire ECAC Metro region for her efforts on the NYU-Poly softball team.

Merilli went 3-0 over the week, had two complete-game shutouts and struck out 14 batters in 16 innings.

Shippensburg freshman Derek Nothstein, a Central graduate, recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 212 feet, 7 inches that shattered the meet record in the Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic at Seth Grove Stadium.

The throw now slots him eighth in Division II. Nothstein had multiple 200-foot throws in Saturday's competition.

Bucknell's Emily Waksmunski, a Bishop Carroll High School graduate, won the 800-meter race at the Bloomsburg Invitational on Friday with a time of 2.16.20.

Tyrone's Johnny Shaffer collected the only extra-base hit of the game, a solo home run, to aid Slippery Rock University to a 4-0 win over California University on Saturday. Slippery Rock earned its seventh consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Baseball Championships berth.

Kelsey Ickes, a Claysburg-Kimmel graduate, broke the Mount Aloysius school softball record of 100 strikeouts as a freshman with 105 with two games to go and playoffs yet to be played. Her record is 10-5.

Hollidaysburg graduate Tyler Sell got the win for Gannon in a 5-3 win over Alderson-Broaddus recently. He pitched six innings and gave up five hits. His season era is 3.95. Gannon finished second in the PSAC West and will take on Kutztown in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday in Butler.

Brooke Over, a graduate of Northern Bedford now pitching for Shenandoah University, pitched her eighth shutout of the season and recorded seven strikeouts in an 8-0 victory over York College. In the second game of the doubleheader, Over earned her 14th win on the season by pitching the final five innings and allowing no earned runs to earn the win in a 10-inning, 8-7 victory over York.

Several area Juniata College track and field athletes placed high at the Landmark Conference meet this past weekend.

Erika Brown (Hollidaysburg) took second in the high jump and fourth in the 400 hurdles with a 1:06.75 time.

Justin Clapper (Bedford), who turned in a Landmark Conference record-breaking discus finish on Saturday, posted a second place hammer throw with a 147-9 mark, the second best mark in Juniata history.

Tyler Mandley (Altoona) took gold in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.51, earning him first-team Landmark Conference honors.

Women javelin throwers took third and fourth with Kristyn Ginter (Bellwood-Antis) leading the way with a 104-4 mark, and Kyle Berrena (Juniata Valley) threw for 103-11.
