Ridge's Young has highlight of day

April 28, 2012

LOYSBURG - Michael Young was nervous on Friday, but the Bedford prom was only part of the reason for his butterflies.

Young, Chestnut Ridge High School's star triple jumper, had some records to chase at the Northern Bedford County Track and Field Invitational before he danced the night away. And, if his feet served him as well on the floor as they did in the pit, he had quite a night.

Despite his jitters, the cold and an inability to hit the board, Young still established a new meet record in his lone event before calling it a day, jumping 45 feet, 1 inch in one of the day's highlights for area performers.

Maria Snyder was strong for Northern Bedford.

Ridge's Matt Dull set a meet record in the 300 hurdles in addition to winning the 110s, while Zach Pressel tied his own meet record in the high jump to spearhead Northern Bedford. Northern Bedford's Maria Snyder had the top meet for area girls, coming away with first in the 1600 and 3200 runs.

Young's distance was 2 inches longer than the previous mark set by Northern Bedford's Zach Reed two years ago. It also was 7 inches better than his previous best this spring and just 3 shy of a personal record. Northern Bedford's Tayler Pressel was second at 43-10.5.

"It's definitely made my day a lot better. I was nervous all day. It was great to get the record and get that off my mind,'' Young said. "It [the record] was really something important to me. I was looking forward to coming in and going after the record.''

If things weren't encouraging enough, Young, who won the seventh-place medal at last year's PIAA Class AA meet was leaving a lot of room for improvement just in his takeoffs.

"I'm really pleased,'' Ridge coach Bob McVicker said. "He's off on his approach and behind the board a good 3 or 4 inches. He's basically giving up a foot. To jump 45s in 40-to-50-degree weather is super. Has he been on his mark, it probably would have put him close to the top in the state.

"We haven't had a meet in three weeks. When we hit good weather, I expect big things.''

"My leg strength is where I want it. On a cool day, it's just a matter of getting out there and working it out,'' Young said.

Young set the new record on his last attempt.

"He had a really nice series. He had 43 on his first one, and he consistently climbed,'' McVicker said. "And he was consistently off the board on all of them. But he's worked all summer and he's got his goals set, and I really hope he gets them.''

Dull, meanwhile, breezed in the 300 hurdles. His time of 39.59 seconds was more than a second faster than Central's Dan Hoover clocked in setting the meet record a year ago, and he crossed the finish line almost 2 full seconds ahead of second-place Greg Boyer of Greencastle-Antrim.

It was just another feather in the cap of Dull for this strong spring. The reigning PIAA Class AA fifth-place medalist in the 300 hurdles, when he posted a 39.99, has been running sub-40-second times for weeks. He also won the 110 hurdles on Friday.

"I've been feeling really good. We figured if I could come into the season running at where I ended last year, we figured I could improve even more and have better times,'' Dull said.

That's easier said than done, though. Dull also plays football and wrestles for Ridge.

"I don't have a lot of time to work on the hurdles through the break, so I guess it's just the hard work throughout the sports,'' Dull said. "Wrestling probably helps with the endurance, and I love to run. I can't say too much. I thank the Lord for the talent.''

Zach Pressel led Northern Bedford by tying the meet record of 6-4 in winning the high jump. His twin brother, Tayler, bounced back from his second-place finish in the triple jump to beat his brother by a half-inch for first in the long jump.

Trenton Barnes also gave the Black Panthers first-place points in the 200 meters (23.35) and almost pulled out the 100 dash at the end before settling for second. Northern Bedford wrapped up the meet by winning the four-by-400 relay, in which the Pressels and Barnes teamed with Coltin Ebersole.

Snyder, as expected, won the mile and two-mile runs convincingly. The defending PIAA silver medalist in the Class AA 3200, Snyder, still just a junior, didn't challenge the meet record in that event or the 1600, though, as some anticipated.

Snyder seemed mildly disappointed but understood there were some factors working against a record hunt on Friday - she had a invitational two days before and also ran the 800, placing fourth.

"They just wanted me to use it to keep working and pushing the times. Last year, I had Esther [Wind] here, and I was pushed by her. It's harder this year, because she's not here,'' Snyder said. "Today was good. Wednesday we were at Hancock. I'm just trying to work through it. You have your ups and downs. I'm a little bit upset with my times.''

Snyder ran 5:25.91 in the 1600 and 11:56.46 in the 3200.

Tussey Mountain had a pair of individual winners on the girls side: Junior Carlee Bussard took the shot put with a throw of 30-11.25, while sophomore Allyson Gearhart was first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.15.

Bedford's Carrie Baker won the pole vault with a jump of 9-9, 6 inches higher than Everett's Keira Bair.

No team score was kept.
