Artist displays installations
The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona will open its latest exhibition, "Daniel Burke: Repurposed," on May 11. The installation exhibition features nearly 40 works, including paintings, drawings, and large-scale installation pieces, and will remain on view through Sept. 8.
Burke is a professor of art and chair of the art department at Mercyhurst College in Erie. He has won prizes and honors in more than 60 juried competitions, including awards in 29 national and international shows.
The museum will celebrate the exhibition at a Blue Monday program on May 14. The event begins at 6 p.m. and features light supper and drinks. Music will be provided by Stormy. The cost is $20 per person. For reservations, call the museum at 946-4464.
Burke will return to SAMA-Altoona for a Lunch a l'Art program at noon June 14. The program includes lunch and a presentation by the artist. Cost is $13 or $12 for SAMA members.
Exhibit shows local artists
BEDFORD - The Bedford County Arts Council will exhibit watercolor landscapes by Barbara Benigni and handcrafted jewelry by Monique Ridet from May 2 to May 26 at the Bedford County Arts Center. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. May 5.
Benigni taught art in the Bedford Area School District for more than thirty years. Ridet is a ceramic, glass and jewelry artist who moved to the Bedford area in 2005.
The center is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Percussion groups unite
HUNTINGDON - The Juniata College Percussion Ensembles will join with Portal Percussion Group, a student ensemble from Millersville University, at a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.
Admission is $3 for adults and free for children under age 18 and Juniata students with current ID.
Lawrence to play show
INDIANA - The Indiana County Fraternal Order of Police Rhododendron Lodge No. 33 will present country music star Tracy Lawrence as the headliner of their annual country music show on July 22 at the Indiana County Fairgrounds at Mack Park.
Lawrence and opening act Larry Frick will perform two shows, at 1 and 6 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the FOP.
Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 at the gate. Tickets can be ordered by calling 724-349-9114.
Historic fort opening soon
SINKING VALLEY - Fort Roberdeau Historical Site will open to the public for the 2012 season on May 1. The reconstructed Revolutionary War Fort will be open daily for guided tours from until Oct. 31.
The fort is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
