Kyper, Kurtz propel Lady Hornets to 2 wins

ALEXANDRIA - Rachel Kyper won the long and triple jumps, and Brittany Kurtz won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs to help lead Juniata Valley over Mount Union, 92-56, and Southern Huntingdon, 103-47, in high school girls track and field on Tuesday.

Lydia Jenkins was victorious in the 100 hurdles, and Faith Leri finished first in the 300 hurdles for the Lady Hornets.

The Juniata Valley boys lost to Mount Union, 84-65, and Southern Huntingdon, 116-34.

The Hornets' Ian Hawn was first in the javelin.

Aungst wins two events

STATE COLLEGE - Madison Aungst won the 100 and 200 dashes and was a member of the winning 400 relay team, but the Hollidaysburg girls track and field team fell to State College, 118-32.

The Hollidaysburg boys lost to State College, 121-29.

Winning events for the Golden Tigers were Bradley Baronner in the 800 run, Josh Daisley in the javelin and the 3200 relay team.

Millionaires beat Altoona

WILLIAMSPORT - Andria Bower pitched a two-hitter and had two hits to lead Williamsport to a five-inning 7-0 win over Altoona in a high school softball game halted due to rain.

BELLWOOD - Gabby Troutman had nine service points and two aces, and Raegan Plowman added seven service points to help lead Bellwood-Antis to a victory over Spring Cove, 25-15, 19-25, 15-6, in junior high girls volleyball action.

Heights juniors triumph

PATTON - Allison Becker had 12 service points, and Kirstin Davis had four kills as Cambria Heights defeated Richland, 25-16, 25-7, in junior high girls volleyball action.

Carroll juniors sweep BM

EBENSBURG - Bishop Carroll defeated Bishop McCort, 25-13, 25-9, in junior high girls volleyball.

Ellie Yahner led the Lady Huskies with 15 service points, while teammate Rebecca Kwisnek added nine service points to improve to 7-2. McCort fell to 6-3.

JV: Bishop Carroll, 25-18, 25-14. Records: Bishop Carroll (9-0).

Tiger juniors fall

STATE COLLEGE - The Hollidaysburg junior high girls volleyball team fell to Mount Nittany, 25-9, 25-17.

Lauren Lehew led the Lady Tigers with four service points, while Emily Baranik added two blocks.

JV: Mount Nittany, 28-26, 25-19. Rhodes, H, nine service points, four aces.

Red Devil juniors lose

EBENSBURG - Somerset beat Central Cambria, 25-21, 25-20, in junior high girls volleyball action. Central Cambria is now 2-4.

Smith honored by AMCC

PITTSBURGH - For the third time this season, Penn State Altoona softball junior Jackie Smith, a Hollidaysburg graduate, has been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's Pitcher of the Week.

Smith went 2-0 in two starts last week for the Lady Lions. Her wins came against AMCC opponents La Roche College and Pitt-Greensburg, helping her team stay in the hunt for the top seed heading into the AMCC Tournament.

In two complete game victories, Smith allowed only four runs while recording eight strikeouts. She also showed great control, walking just two batters in 14 innings of work.

The Lady Lions are 29-5 overall, including a 14-2 record in-conference, going into today's doubleheader against Case Western at Penn State's Nittany Lion Softball Park.
