Covering the bases

April 22, 2012
By Cory Giger (cgiger@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: The Pirates' gain was the Curve's loss Saturday night as pitcher A.J. Burnett did not make his scheduled rehab start at PNG Field because he was recalled by the Bucs and started at PNC Park against the Cardinals. It would have been a unique scenario for the Curve as it would have meant a Pirates player playing for Altoona before he ever got a chance to play for the Bucs.

SAFE AT FIRST: The Curve were later dealt a double whammy when Saturday's game against Richmond was rained out.

STEALING SECOND: "While we know our fans would've enjoyed seeing A.J. pitch in Altoona, it actually worked out for the best," Curve GM Rob Egan said. "The Pirates needed him to pitch in Pittsburgh, and the weather cleared there. We still hoped to get our game in, but the weather wasn't on our side when we were scheduled to start."

ROUNDING THIRD: Saturday's rainout will be made up as part of a doubleheader May 5 beginning at 5 p.m.

HEADING HOME: Today's game is at 1 p.m. against Richmond at PNG Field. Pitching matchups are Curve LHP Aaron Poreda (2-0, 1.64) vs. Flying Squirrels RHP Craig Westcott (0-2, 6.89).
