DUNCANSVILLE -- The driver of a sedan that crashed into a van of state inmates was killed this afternoon on the 2600 block of old Route 22, state police report.
State police at Hollidaysburg said the driver of the late-model Chevy Impala with New York plates crossed the center line and hit the van at about 2 p.m.
State police are not releasing the identity of the driver pending notification of next of kin.
Judy Smith, public information officer for the State Correctional Institution at Pine Grove, said the van was carrying two corrections officers and 10 inmates. She said the inmates were being transported in waist chains, handcuffs and leg shackles and she did not believe they were free at any time.
Smith said they were being transferred from SCI Smithfield to SCI Pine Grove in Indiana County.
Witnesses at the scene indicate the corrections officers were shaken up and told bystanders that none of the inmates were seriously injured.
Old Route 22 will be closed for several hours until a state police reconstructionist is finished at the scene.
Blair County Christian School said parents were funneled to one entrance to pick up children at the close of school.
Foot of Ten Elementary School was on lockdown for about a half hour, Hollidaysburg School District spokeswoman Linda Russo said. She said one bus of 15 Foot of Ten students was affected by the road closures, and parents were contacted to meet the bus at a designated location.
Mirror reporters are on the scene. This story will be updated.
