Lady Bearcats breeze to their own tourney crown

HUNTINGDON - The Huntingdon softball team won its own tournament on Saturday, beating Williamsburg, 14-4, in the opener and Juniata Valley, 11-0, in the title game.

Juniata Valley beat Hollidaysburg, 7-1, to get to the finals. In the consolation game, Hollidaysburg beat Williamsburg, 17-5.

In the Lady Bearcats' 14-4, six-inning win over Williamsburg, Toni Strait led the winners with five hits and two RBIs. Teammate Casey Baird added two hits and three RBIs as Huntingdon scored six runs in each of the second and fourth innings.

Cassondra Kensinger had two hits for the Lady Pirates.

In the title game, Baird homered, finished with two hits and drove in three runs in the five-inning win. Teammates Brionna Mort, Atalie Yingling and Cheyanne Snyder each added two hits.

Heather Carper had two of Valley's three hits.

Morgan Glover won both games for Huntingdon, now 5-4.

Valley's win over the Lady Tigers was highlighted by Abbie Zinobile, who had two hits and two RBIs to go with three hits and an RBI from Kerigan Ammerman. Carper pitched a two-hitter, struck out six and walked just one.

In Hollidaysburg's consolation game win, its first victory of the year (1-8), the Lady Tigers blew the game wide open with seven runs in the second inning.

Hannah Mercer, Taylor Herr, Elizabeth Carter, Brooke Ickes and Julie Brustle each had three hits for the winners, who got two RBIs each from Mercer, Ickes and Peyton Civils. Williamsburg got two hits from Caitlyn England.

Altoona goes 0-2

BELLEFONTE - Altoona went 0-2 in the O'Leary Memorial Softball Tournament hosted by Bellefonte High School.

Altoona lost to Bellefonte, 14-2, in five innings in the first game, and fell to West Branch, 12-2, in five innings in the second game. Altoona's Madeline Berry had two hits in the second game and drove in a run in each game.

Bellefonte won the tourney by beating Southern Huntingdon.

n The Philipsburg-Osceola junior high team took two from Clearfield, 10-1 and 10-4. Winning pitcher Chelsea Henry struck out 10 and threw a one-hitter in the opener. Haylee Hayward contributed an RBI triple.

In the nightcap, Henry struck out nine in throwing another one-hitter as her team improved to 2-1. Hayward had two hits and two RBIs to go with a two-run double from Courtney Watson. The P-O B team also won both games, 18-5 and 16-3.

n The Glendale junior high team is 5-5 after a twinbill sweep over Curwensville, 16-1 and 33-2.

In the 16-1 win, Lauryn Clarkson had three hits and four RBIs to go with Anna Fowler's two hits, including a home run, and five RBIs. Kaneisha Gustafson added a three-run homer to go with Mandee Glass' two hits and two RBIs. In the 33-2 victory, Fowler had four hits and six RBIs to go with three hits and three RBIs from Kiana Johnston. Clarkson added two hits and four RBIs to go with two hits and three RBIs from Bailey Crook and two hits and two RBIs from Gustafson.
