IUP softball sets event to help cancer patients

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania softball team will be having a "Cancer Awareness Day" on Friday in memory of Heather Miller, an 11-year-old student at Chestnut Ridge Middle School who passed away from cancer in 2010.

The event was planned by Claysburg-Kimmel graduate Monica Iachini, a member of the Crimson Hawks, and assistant coach Julia Popovich.

IUP's softball team has several members from local high schools, including Iachini, Marissa Leslie and Christi Mauk from Claysburg-Kimmel and Stefanie McCoy from Chestnut Ridge.

All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to "Heather's Haven" which is set to be a camp for children who are battling cancer and their families.

The event will take place Friday at Podbielski Field on the Indiana campus during a doubleheader against Bloomsburg. The first game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. and the second at 5.

Through 27 games, Leslie is hitting .337, and Iachini is batting .317. McCoy has nine hits, and Mauk has six in reserve roles.

Northern Bedford graduate Brooke Over recently picked up four victories and threw a no-hitter for the Shenandoah softball team.

Over is fifth in the nation in strikeouts at the Division III level with 116. She also ranks No. 10 in strikeouts per seven innings pitched, 13th in fewest hits given up per seven innings pitched and is tied for 13th in shutouts.

Jackie Smith, a Hollidaysburg graduate at Penn State Altoona, was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's Pitcher of the Week on April 2. Through that date, Smith led the AMCC with seven victories.

Johnny Shaffer, a Tyrone graduate, doubled and scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to aid the Slippery Rock baseball team to a 5-4 victory against Mansfield on April 1.

Friday, Shaffer tripled and singled while driving in three runs for Slippery Rock in a 10-1 triumph over Fairmont State.

Hollidaysburg graduate Nathan Pope went 3-for-4 at the plate for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown baseball team in a 9-3 loss to Seton Hill on Saturday. Glendale graduate Drew Westover had two hits and an RBI in the game, while Central graduate Drew Ebersole chipped in with two hits.

Westover slugged a pair of home runs during a pair of losses to Seton Hill on Friday.

Jess Delic, a Penn Cambria graduate competing for the University of Arkon track and field team, placed second in the women's javelin at the Tennessee Challege at the University of Tennesse on Saturday. Delic threw an all-time personal-best 146 feet, 8 inches.

Derek Nothstein, a Central graduate who competes for the Shippensburg track and field team, threw the javelin 202 feet, 4 inches at the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.

Northern Bedford graduate Brittany Beach, a member of the Lock Haven track and field team, placed third in the javelin with a throw of 108-03 in the Elliston Earlybird Meet at Lock Haven. She also placed fourth in the Fred Hardy Invite at Ricmond University with a 119-10, which qualified her for the PSAC conference meet.

Cassie Beach, a Northern Bedford graduate now at Lock Haven, was fourth in the javelin in the Elliston Earlybird Meet with a 98-09 and was ninth in the Hardy Invite with a 108-07.

Juniata College's Kristyn Ginter, a senior from Bellwood-Antis, was seventh in the javelin in the Goucher Track and Field Invitational in Towson, Md., with a throw of 104-5.

Bellwood-Antis graduate Ben Hatch was part of the University of Pittsburgh 3,200-meter relay team that placed second at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., in a time of 7 minutes, 32.87 seconds.

Penn State gymnast Scott Rosenthal, a junior from Clearfield who trained at Gemini Gymnastics in Altoona, scored a 15.90 on the still rings Saturday to capture the Big Ten Conference championship in the event.

Peter Riley, a Northern Bedford graduate who played high school tennis for Tussey Mountain, won his No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0 and his No. 1 doubles match, 8-0, in a match for Grove City in a win over Washington and Jefferson on April 2.

On April 3, Riley won his No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-1, and his No. 1 doubles match, 9-7, in a match against Franciscan.

Central Cambria graduate Jordan Miller finished ninth in 3-pointers per game among NCAA Division II players during his most recent season with the Pitt-Johnstown basketball team. Miller was also 13th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (44.2).

Hollidaysburg graduate Sara Trimarco was 93rd in the nation with 3.8 assists per game for the UPJ women.

Derek Mathews, an Altoona graduate, was chosen for the Delaware Valley Collegiate Conference All-Star team. Mathews competes as a sophomore for the West Chester hockey team.

Hollidaysburg graduate Mike Macionsky finished tied for 53rd in the individual competition at the WVIAC Southern Regional golf championship. Macionsky competes for Pitt-Johnstown.
