Curve pitcher has Masters' tie

April 8, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

The Curve's starting pitcher Saturday night, Brandon Cumpton, was born in Augusta, Ga., and lives only 10 minutes away from the home of the Masters.

Cumpton said he's never played at Augusta National Golf Club and has never been to the Masters, because it's always been during his baseball season. His parents have gone to the prestigious tournament the past two years.

"I've driven by it a decent bit, but you can't really see it," Cumpton said of the famed course. "It's gated in, and it's got a bunch of trees in front of it. Every now and then you get a glimpse at a fairway or two."

When people find out he's from Augusta, they often ask Cumpton about the Masters.

"A lot of guys ask if I've ever played there," he said.

He does play golf, like many minor leaguers, but Cumpton had a confession.

"I'll go out and play a lot, but I'm not good at all," he said.
