Altoona places fifth at Derry tournament

DERRY - Led by Mitchell Snyder's 37 kills, 15 service points and 28 digs and Clay Gingrich's 30 kills, 18 service points and 41 digs, the Altoona boys volleyball team finished fifth in the 16-team Derry Invitational Saturday.

In the morning pool, the Mountain Lions split with Montour, 25-15, 26-28, beat Shaler, 27-25, 25-18 and lost to Latrobe, 22-25, 27-29. In the afternoon pool, the Lions beat Plum, 25-16, Norwin, 25-23, and Penn Trafford, 25-21.

Altoona (7-4) beat Penn Hills, 25-20, in the playoff round and lost to Derry, 29-27.

The Lions also got contributions from Tanner Baumgartner (17 kills, 22 service points, 41 assists, 14 digs, four aces), Branden McGarvey (21 service points, 36 assists), Brett Koelle (15 kills, 11 blocks), Dan Stewart (16 blocks) and Stefon Hall (13 blocks), Brandon Stitt (15 service points) and Kody Clawson (12 service points).

Lions finish sixth

It was a tough day for the Altoona and Hollidaysburg tennis teams at the Mountain Lion Invitational held at both ProCare Health and Fitness and The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

The Mountain Lions finished sixth out of eight teams while the Golden Tigers placed seventh. Erie Cathedral Prep won the tournament.

Altoona's top performers took fourth. Ryan Good made it to the consolation match at No. 3 singles before losing to Niki Veronis of Manheim Township. The doubles team of Mustafa Ahmad and Danny Cowan lost in the consolation finals to Abington Heights' Dan Jasinski and Eric Onofrey.

At No. 3 singles, Hollidaysburg's Cameron Humphrey won the fifth-sixth-place match over Mount Lebanon's Phil Tatarzyn.
