TYRONE - The Grier School is holding its sixth annual Grier Gala Performance and Workshop on Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1, 2012.
The opening number for the Student Showcase Performance is being choreographed by Kiki Lucas, resident choreographer for Houston Metropolitan Dance Company.
All schools in the area were invited to participate and also enter a dance of their choice to represent their dance school. The opening number is for all students and will be taught in two rehearsals, giving the dancers a chance to see how the professional dance world works, in learning choreography quickly and execution of choreography as well. It's also a lesson in being able to all work together and understand that, in the professional dance world, one is always working with new dancers and the students are given an opportunity to do that.
The workshop classes are both Saturday and Sunday. Classes will be taught by Jason McDole (Lubovitch Dance Company), Marlana Doyle and Kiki Lucas (both Houston Metropolitan Dance Company), Jon Lehrer (artistic director of Lehrer Dance Company), Greer Reed (artistic director, August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble; "25 most-to-watch" Dance Magazine 2012), Kiesha Lalama (Point Park University faculty, master choreographer, co-director), Maria Caruso (artistic director, Bodiography Contemporary Ballet Company, chair, La Roche College dance major) and Roni Koresh, (artistic director, Koresh Dance Company, faculty University of the Arts in Philadelphia).
There is a performance on Saturday for all registered students.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $35 (cash only). Performances will be given by August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble, Bodiography Contemporary Ballet Company, Fluidity Dance Company, Lehrer Dance, Koresh Dance Company, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company and Lubovitch Dance Company.
The Student Showcase Performance and the Gala Performance both start at 7:30 p.m. at the Grier School Performing Arts building. Students must be registered to attend and participate. Fluidity Dance Company will also be auditioning for its 2012-13 season.
Jocelyn Hrzic, director of the Grier School Dance Program, creator of the Grier Gala and artistic director of Fluidity Dance Company, was also selected as a finalist for the Jazz Dance World Congress Choreography Festival, to be held this summer in Pittsburgh.
She will also be auditioning for dancers to represent her choreography at the festival. Courtesy photo
