Area girls track and field teams show promise

2012 girls track and field preview

March 25, 2012
By Matt Michelone (sports@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

The Altoona Area High School girls track and field team will be returning two athletes who were named to the Mirror's track all-star team last season.

The Lady Lions will be led by senior hurdler Nikki Kerns, who is the defending District 6 Class AAA 300-meter hurdles champ.

Sophomore Abby Wagner will lead Altoona on the jumps as she is looking to win back-to-back District 6-AAA long jump titles after also placing fourth in the triple jump.

Hollidaysburg will try to capitalize on its depth and will be led by junior Lauren Pheasant and senior Alexis Preston.

In District 6 Class AA, Bishop Guilfoyle's Kate Meck will look to defend her high jump championship, and Bellwood-Antis returns 13 athletes.

In District 5, junior Maria Snyder of Northern Bedford returns after having won a silver medal in the 3,200 run in the PIAA Championships last season.

Concerns: "My biggest concern for the girls team is depth. Our numbers are a little lower this year than in the past. We also have a very young team that is still learning.''

Overall outlook: "I think the girls team will do well this year. We have an experienced or talented individual in each event with experienced freshman moving up from junior high. A few individuals should break school records and do very well at districts and larger invitationals.''
