High school softball preview

Philipsburg-Osceola trying to return to state title game

March 22, 2012
By Scott Franco (sfranco@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

When it came to high school softball in 2011, several local teams in the Mirror coverage area did quite well for themselves, especially if you were the Philipsburg-Osceola Lady Mounties.

Jim Gonder's team won the PIAA Class AA state title, and the team it beat in the District 6 championship, Central Cambria, won a first-round state playoff game over another Mirror team, Chestnut Ridge, which won the District 5 title.

Then you have Claysburg-Kimmel, which won the District 6 Class A title. Those teams, along with 20 other teams in the area, are dreaming of success and much more this season. Here is a capsule look at those clubs.

Overall outlook: "On paper, our staring nine looks solid. [Casey] Baird and [Brionna] Mort are two of the better hitters in the area, with [Atalie] Yingling and [Alexyss] Spencer adding quality sticks to the lineup. Defensively, Strait takes a back seat to no one in the area in centerfield, and the rest of the defense is strong. If we avoid injuries and give our young pitcher the offensive and defensive support we are capable of, we should continue to take steps forward. We surprised a few teams last year but must be consistent from day one if we are to go deeper into the playoffs this season."
