High school baseball preview

Bedford's Shippey returns in quest to win another title

March 21, 2012
By Michael Boytim (mboytim@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

Three teams from the Mirror coverage area will attempt to defend district titles when the high school baseball season kicks off in the upcoming days.

Of those teams, Bedford has the most coming back.

The Bisons, who won the District 5 Class AA title with a victory over Everett last year, won a state playoff game before losing to Central in the PIAA quarterfinals. Bedford returns six starters, including Marcus Shippey, who made the first team on the Mirror's all-star squad last season.

Jextin Pugh, who made the Mirror’s first team all-star squad last year, returns for BG.

"Offensively we have a core group of returning starters back in the middle of the lineup," Bedford coach Scott Waugerman said. "[We're] hoping to make a run in the postseason again this year."

The team that stopped the Bisons' run last year, Central, has only three starters returning from the team that won the District 6 Class AA title and made it all the way to the PIAA semifinals. The year before, Central lost in the PIAA championship game.

"The kids have been working their tails off in the offseason and preseason practices," Central coach A.J. Hoenstine said. "We may struggle early to find the right lineup, but I am confident the kids will continue to work hard and peak come the end of the season."

The area's other district champion, Bishop Carroll, will have a tough road back to defend its District 6 Class A championship. The Huskies lost nine of the 13 players on their roster last season.

Tussey Mountain, which lost in the District 5 Class A title game to Salisbury Elk-Lick, has five returning starters but must fill several holes in key positions and adjust to a new coach.

The following is a capsulized preview for each team.

Newcomers: Lucas Hearn, sr., of; Caleb Morrissey, so., inf.-of

Strengths: "Pitching, defense"

Concerns: "We have a small roster this year, so we need to keep everybody healthy, and we cannot afford any injuries."

Overall outlook: "From what I've seen in our practices, we should have a good team this year. The kids are doing what we ask them and working hard. We are looking forward to a strong season. We hope to win our league and make it to districts."

Assistant coaches: Dan McMonagle, Alan McCall

Junior high coaches: Thad White, Brady Appleman
