LEWISBURG - Even though they did not return home with a medal, members of the Central Cambria swim team returned with new school records after a day at the PIAA Class AA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Competing at Bucknell University, Kelsie Conrad finished 23rd out of 32 in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.80. Last year, she finished 28th at states, but this year, her time broke the school record which was 1:01.85.
"It was one of the days where I had a really good feeling about her because she was really relaxed. She was in a zone," Central Cambria coach Ann Risaliti said. " You could tell she was ready to go."
The winning time was turned in by Mars High School's Maggie Group, who finished the event in 54 seconds.
In the boys 400 freestyle relay, the team of Kole Newcomer, Alex Chiappini, Matt Brady and Adam Westrick set a new school record with a time of 3:34.94. The team finished 22nd out of 32 teams. The old school record was held by the same group.
"I was not quite sure how they would do, but they are so competitive," Risaliti said. "They always want to do well. The first two looked really good, and after that, they kept going from there. I was just so happy for them. They thought they could do it and they did."
Fairview turned in a first-place time in the event with a 3:13.67.
