District 6 this morning announced the sites and times for its Class AAAA and AAA championship basketball games this week.
The Class AAA final between defending champion Hollidaysburg and top-seeded Tyrone will be played at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It will be the second game of a doubleheader also involving the Tyrone/Bishop McCort Class AA boys semifinal clash, which tips off at 6.
The top-seeded Altoona girls will attempt to defend their Class AAAA crown on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School against No. 3 seed State College in a rematch of the 2011 final. That will be followed by the 6-AAAA boys championship game pitting State College against Mifflin County at 8 p.m.
The 6-AAA boys championship will be held on Thursday at the Richland High School Sports Center at 7 p.m. That game has Johnstown facing off with Somerset.
District 6 also released isites and times for its semifinals in Class AA and Class A, including a Bishop Guilffoyle Catholic doubleheader at Central Cambria High School in Ebensburg on Tuesday night. The defending PIAA finalist Lady Marauders take on perennial playoff opponent Conemaugh Valley at 6 p.m. The Guilfoyle boys meet Bishop Carroll, the reigning 6-A champion, at 7:30. Both those games are in Class A.
In the other Class A semifinal games on Tuesday, Northern Cambria, seeded first, plays Glendale at Bishop Carroll High School in Ebensburg at 7 p.m. in a boys game, while the Portage girls try to punch their ticket into their first-ever district championship game against 2011 PIAA semifinalist Homer-Center at Richland at 7.
In the other Class AA game involving an area team, the Bellwood-Antis boys take on Westmont Hilltop in a three-versus-two-seed game at Central Cambria on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., after the Westmont and Forest Hills girls square off.
At nearby Bishop Carroll, Richland and Blairsville will play in the other 6-AA girls game.
District 6's Class AA and A championships all are slated for Saturday with the sites and times still to be determined. Consolation games in those classifications will be held on Friday night.
The District 5 playoffs also hit the semifinal round this week, beginning with an all-area Class AA girls game between archrivals Northern Bedford and Tussey Mountain in Saxton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. At the same time, the Everett girls will endeavor to pull off their second upset in the 5-AA girls tournament in Davidsville against top-seeded Conemaugh Township.
The 5-AA boys swing into action on Wednesday with a pair of games at 7 p.m.: Chestnut Ridge goes for its third win of the year against Northern Bedford in New Paris, while Tussey Mountain travels to Conemaugh Township.
All four District 5 finals will be played at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown later this week. The Class AA girls will be the first game of a doubleheader with the Class A boys on Friday night. The Class AA boys will be decided Saturday night after the Class A girls game.
