Vanilla dough:

3/4 cup shortening (softened)

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla thoroughly. Mix flour, powder and salt in separate bowl. Stir shortening mixture into flour mixture.

Chocolate dough:

3/4 cup shortening (softened)

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled

Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla thoroughly. Mix flour, powder and salt in separate bowl. Stir shortening mixture into flour mixture. Add chocolate to dough mixture.

With rolling pin, roll each dough thin, approximately 3/16". Lay chocolate dough on top of vanilla dough once flat. Roll layered mixture, jelly roll-style, beginning at wide end.

Chill roll for approximately one hour and then slice dough about 1/8" thick. Place slices on lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for six to eight minutes.

Recipe makes approximately 6 to 8 dozen 3" cookies.
