Mary Elizabeth Balzano, 90, Altoona, died Wednesday at her residence.
She was born in Mount Carmel, Ill., daughter of the late Kenneth and Agnes (Nacke) Wood. She married John Francis Balzano on Nov. 22, 1952, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and he died on Oct. 6, 1974.
Surviving are eight children: Dr. Patricia Sanker of Mechanicsburg, Christine Fuoss (Mark, MD) of Sewickley, Jane Stitko (Donald) of Gallitzin, John Balzano of Altoona, Ann Stone (William) of York, Judith Tucci (Leo) of Absecon, N.J., Martha Schwing of Elizabethtown and Mary Tomaino (Mario) of Absecon, N.J.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren: Brian Sanker, Adam Fuoss, Sarah Fuoss, Benjamin Fuoss, Michael Tucci, David Tucci, Allison Schwing, Ryan Schwing, Matthew Schwing, Alex Tomaino, Andrew Tomaino, Sean Stone, Nathan Stone and Bethany Schwing; and two brothers: John Wood (Cathy) of Brookings, S.D., and Richard Wood (Bette) of Savannah, Ga.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Wood-Jansen; and four brothers: Joseph, Kenneth, James and David Wood.
Mary was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of Hahnemann School of Nursing, Philadelphia. She served as a U.S. Navy nurse during WWII, achieving the rank of lieutenant. She retired as a registered nurse in 1974 from the Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona.
Friends will be received from 10:30 a.m. until the noon funeral Mass Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
