Golden Eagle golfers have tough day at states

October 25, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

From Mirror reports

YORK - Tyrone golfers Gregory Ferguson and Olivia Stever each had a rough first day at the PIAA golf championships at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort Monday.

Ferguson made par on his first two holes before starting to struggle. The Golden Eagle junior finished with eight pars, seven bogeys and three double bogeys, including the final hole.

"Gregory really struggled today," Tyrone coach Greg Ferguson said. "He had 41 putts, and that pretty much sums up his day."

Ferguson shot 42 on the front and 41 on the back-nine for a total of 83 on the par-71 course. He is tied for 39th in the field of 48.

Stever bogeyed her first two holes en route to shooting a 43 on the front and a 46 on the back-nine.

The Tyrone senior played the course a year ago after qualifying for state competition, but it did not help Monday.

"Olivia really struggled with her iron play today," Greg Ferguson said.

Stever made par on five holes, bogey on nine and recorded four double bogeys.

Neither Stever or Ferguson made a birdie.

It was a bad day overall for District 6.

Richland's Brady Moran is tied for 22nd after shooting a 79, and the State College girls team is in fourth after shooting a combined score of 412. Christine Hughes led the Lady Little Lions with a 94. Every other State College golfer shot at least a 104.

The second and final round is today. Stever will begin on the first tee at 8:40 a.m. Ferguson will start off the 10th tee at 8:50 a.m.
