Angelo L. "Angie" Gioiosa, 72, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Seventh Avenue Campus.
He was born in Altoona, son of Elizabeth (Bidoli) Gioiosa and the late Michael Gioiosa.
Surviving are his mother and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Angie was a 1956 graduate of Altoona High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-59 as a third class petty officer. He was a 1963 graduate of Slippery Rock University, where he ran track and cross country and became an All American in cross country. He retired in 1992 from the Altoona Area School District with 26 years of service as a social studies teacher. He had also been the head coach of the Altoona cross country team and assistant coach of the track team from 1966-80. On April 20, 2002, he was inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1976, Angie won the JFK 50-mile race on the Appalachian Trail. He won numerous marathons in his age category, competing in more than 50 marathons throughout the nation, including the Boston Marathon which he ran 10 times. His total distance over his lifetime of running equaled three times around the Earth.
He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church. He was an avid sports trivia enthusiast and a member of the Frohsinn Singing Society. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home (www.santellafuneralhome.com), where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Mausoleum with full military honors.
In memory of Angie, donations may be made to the Altoona Area cross country and track team scholarships in his name.
