CLAYSBURG - Facing a defense in Claysburg-Kimmel that had earned two shutout victories to open the season, and had limited its first two opponents to 65 total yards, Bellwood-Antis knew what kind of challenge it was up against heading into Bulldog Stadium Friday.
Just 5 seconds into the second quarter and the score tied at 7, the Blue Devils answered the call and began imposing their will on defense and picking apart the Bulldogs with a high-powered, balanced attack on offense.
Andrew DeGol ran through the middle for a 7-yard touchdown, the first of four B-A TDs in the second quarter, giving his team the lead for good in a 40-7 rout during Inter-County Conference North Division action.
"If you want to be a good football team you have to have some balance," Bellwood-Antis coach John Hayes said. "You can't beat the good teams with just one dimension anymore We couldn't have beaten this football team [C-K] if we would have just been allowed to run the football. They play good solid defense."
DeGol scored again on a 32-yard burst to pay dirt, before quarterback Ryan Stuby hooked up with Ian O'Shea on a flea flicker that went 60 yards for points, and then threw an 8-yard strike to Jeremy Claypoole that made the contest 34-7 with 1:07 before the half.
"They [Bellwood] have a lot of weapons on offense - a lot of good athletes," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Joe Kitt said. "There's a lot of guys that you have to take away, and we just couldn't take them all away. They made some great plays and had some big plays in that second quarter that really killed us."
The air and ground game plan kept the C-K defense offbalance as Bellwood-Antis (2-1) racked up 283 yard of offense through the first two quarters with Stuby going 5-for-9 with 163 through the air, and DeGol churning out 130 on the ground.
"I think we were able to slowly gain the upper hand physically," Hayes said. "Andrew DeGol had a big night for us and the line up front obviously made some holes. Ryan Stuby when we took the opportunity, he got the ball behind them [C-K]. We thought we could possible get behind them and we were able to do that."
The Bulldogs (2-1) fought hard but the running space they found in the first quarter (88 yards) was nonexistent as the more physical Blue Devil defensive line pushed their way into the backfield and limited Claysburg to just 10 yards in the second quarter.
The second half proved to be more of the same as Bellwood-Antis set the final score when Casey Gray got his second TD of the game on a 34 run with 7:48 left in the third quarter.
The defense continued suffocating the Bulldogs - limiting C-K's first team offense to just eight totals yards in the second half (the second team garnered 71 yards on the last drive of the game.)
"They did a good job up front. They really handled us up front," Kitt said. "Whenever we seemed to have a successful play, it seemed the next play wasn't very good. That's what hurt us."
Gray made sure the Blue Devils got on the board first as he caught a Stuby pass for a 43-yard scoring strike at 5:18 of the first quarter.
"We need to be more focused at the start of the game. That's one point Coach Hayes brought up in the locker room at halftime," Stuby said. "We had a couple of big plays which gave us a lot of momentum. We just kind of poured it on from there."
Jared Ickes hauled in a 10-yard pass from James Dodson on the Bulldogs' ensuing drive to tie the game up.
Stuby finished with 207 passing yards and three touchdowns, while DeGol garnered 151 rushing yards and two TDs.
