Tyrone Hospital honors volunteers

TYRONE Members of the Tyrone Hospital family gathered to honor Tyrone Hospital's volunteers during an event that was held in recognition of National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week in early May. Volunteers at Tyrone Hospital donate time to assist in a variety of departments.

"We are pleased to have members of the community involved in the hospital, helping us fulfill our healing mission," said Stephen Gildea, CEO at Tyrone Hospital. "They are a very dedicated group of people and they support Tyrone Hospital in a very special way."

In 2010, volunteers donated 1,483 hours to support Tyrone Hospital as follows:

n Frances Hunter of Tyrone donated 95 hours. A volunteer for more than 21 years, she has donated a grand total of 10,518 hours. Hunter currently assists in the materials management department. She is a retired Tyrone Hospital employee. Hunter is also an active member of the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary. n Jack Swiderski of Warriors Mark donated 66 hours. A volunteer for more than 20 years, he has donated a grand total of 4,210 hours. Swiderski assists in nutrition services. n Constance Baker of Tipton donated 206 hours. A volunteer for more than seven years, she has donated a grand total of 1,387 hours. Baker assists in the short procedure unit.

n Anna Mae Campbell of Tyrone donated 111 hours. A volunteer for more than seven years, she has donated a grand total of 1,041 hours. Campbell assists in the marketing office and with special projects for the Tyrone Hospital Development Council.

n Bernie Hand of Tyrone donated 448 hours. A volunteer for nearly a year, Hand assists with a variety of other tasks in the Keystone Headache and Pain Management Center. n Merle Ammerman of Tyrone donated 73 hours. A volunteer for more than a year, she provides clerical support for several different departments including the Keystone Headache and Pain Management Center, surgical services, marketing, the Tyrone Hospital Pre-op Testing and Anesthesia Clinic and other departments as needed.

n Marilyn Hosko of Tyrone donated 59 hours. A volunteer for more than a year, she provides clerical support for several different departments including the Keystone Headache and Pain Management Center, surgical services, marketing, the Tyrone Hospital Pre-op Testing and Anesthesia Clinic and other departments as needed.

n Brenda Boyles of Tyrone donated 52 hours. A volunteer for more than a year, she assists in the health information management department. n Joan Smith of Warriors Mark donated 46 hours. She has donated a total of 88 hours as a volunteer assisting in the nursing department.

n Terrilynn Schultz of Tyrone donated 11 hours in 2010. She assisted with reception and clerical tasks in the laboratory.

Several students also volunteered at Tyrone Hospital during 2010. n Samantha Snyder, a college student studying to be physician assistant, donated 75 hours. She assisted in the short procedure unit.

n Nikki Moore of Port Matilda, a college student studying to be a nurse, donated 34 hours. She assisted in the medical surgical unit.

n Jillian Clark of Altoona, a college student pursuing studies in behavioral health, donated 18 hours. She assisted in the Keystone Headache and Pain Management Center.

n Michelle Ostran of New Jersey, a college student pursuing studies to be physician assistant, donated 37 hours. She assisted in the short procedure unit.

n Alyson Eck a student from Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Altoona, donated 25.5 hours. She assisted in the nursing department.

n Kirsten Baker, a student from Altoona Area High School, donated 78 hours. She assisted on the medical surgical unit.

There were also three students who volunteered during the spring semester of 2011 who were recognized. n Philip Apsaform of Bald Eagle donated 14 hours. He provided clerical support to a variety of hospital departments. n Students from Grier School Lily Zhang and Chloe Xu donated 19 hours and 21 hours. respectively. assisting in the nursing department.
