PITTSBURGH - A couple of Steelers leftovers to start:
n Running back Jonathan Dwyer has lost 20 pounds since the start of training camp.
Shame on him for showing up out of shape, but good that he did something about it.
Bet that it won't happen again.
That kind of sudden shape-up routine isn't the measured program you'll follow at your neighborhood spa.
That's a lot of salads, a lot of running, and a lot of yelling by the coaching staff.
It's in Dwyer's best interests and the Steelers' too, to have options at running back.
Rashard Mendenhall's high-impact style means he can use an occasional breather. Mewelde Moore is an asset on third down because of his pass catching ability, but he's a specialist.
n It seems like the millionth time I've typed this sentence, but the offensive line remains a concern.
Ben Roethlisberger's ability to escape the rush is an important part of his skill set, but it's tough to do that when a defensive player is on him instantly.
The Philadelphia Eagles didn't have much of a game against the Steelers last Thursday, but they did get consistent pressure on the quarterbacks.
Game of the week
Root Sports is moving its high school football game of the week from Thursday to Friday this season.
The reasoning is that too many games were bumped to tape delay by commitments to Pirates and Penguins broadcasts on Thursdays.
OK.
But don't people who are interested in high school sports usually attend games on Friday nights?
That's a pretty strong tradition that won't leave a lot of the most avid high school fans time to watch TV on Friday.
Hard core
Pittsburgh's pro wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino, 75, recently had surgery to replace a heart valve.
While recovering, Sammartino, who is staunchly against drugs, refused pain-killing medications.
Wrestling matches were never legit, but Sammartino's toughness is.
Traffic jams
Kaufmann's warehouse used to be the biggest non-sports attraction on the North Side.
Now there's a lot of everything, and the area is still served by quaint two-lane roads.
If the Pirates are home at the same time there's a concert at Stage AE, you should pack a lunch and maybe pitch a tent.
You'll be there a while.
