'Avenue Q' auditions held

EBENSBURG - Cresson Lake Playhouse will hold auditions on at 5 p.m. Aug. 14 at the CLP Rehearsal Hall, 526 W. Ogle St., for its production of the Broadway hit "Avenue Q."

The production is under the direction of Molly Riva of Altoona.

"Avenue Q" is a musical that mixes live action performers and puppets. In 2003, it won the Tony "Triple Crown," taking home the awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. It ended its Broadway run in 2009 but continues to run Off-Broadway.

All roles are available. Those auditioning should come prepared with 32 bars of your favorite musical score similar in style and a list of scheduling conflicts.

"Avenue Q" will be performed Oct. 13-15 and Oct. 20-22. The musical deals with adult subjects and is not suitable for children.

Music festival set in Portage

PORTAGE - The Portage Area Summerfest will be held from Aug. 12-14 at Crichton-McCormack Park.

The free event will feature live music from Shades Of June and Flood City Brass on Aug. 12, Bethany Praise Band, Singing McGuires, Ruff-Rodes and Fuse on Aug. 13 and The Crescendos, Jim Koban, 'Ole '97 Johnny Cash Tribute Band,The Conniptions and Chuck Blasko & The Vogues on Aug. 14.

The Summerfest will also feature crafts, games, bingo, food vendors, a woodcarver, children's activities, a 5K race and a golf tournament.

Aug. 12 events include a dance for adults from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Cassandra Fire Hall, featuring Flood City Brass.

Aug. 13 events will include a parade and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Aug. 14 events include a car show.

Zappa to play father's songs

STATE COLLEGE - The State Theatre will present "Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa" at 7 p.m. July 31.

The guitarist will perform the music made famous by his legendary father, Frank Zappa, including a new version of his father's classic instrumental "Peaches En Regalia."

The cover is on Dweezil's new album "Go With What You Know."

Tickets for the show are $55 for Gold Circle seats, $45 for orchestra seats and $35 for balcony seats.
