July 4th race impressive

July 10, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

I would like to publicly acknowledge everyone involved in hosting the Fourth of July races in Altoona.

I have been running in the race off and on for 30 years, and your race remains one of my favorite events.

From Sheetz providing quality food for the finishers to the volunteers who do the thankless job of traffic control, your community puts on a first-rate event.

Special kudos to Carolyn Donaldson for doing a great job at the post-race awards ceremony after her very impressive age-group victory. I'll see you next year!

BG's title team of '67 worthy of Hall

I'm hoping this is the year the Bishop Guilfoyle boys state championship team of 1966-67 will be selected for the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame.

What a scrappy, exciting and talented group of young men they were. And such memories they gave those of us who followed them.

I still remember being at the Field House in Pittsburgh when Pat Shute made that last-second basket that enabled the team to move on to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Catholic Athletic Association championship.

How sad that we have lost Pat way to soon. Don't wait another year to recognize the remaining team members.

I'm a fan who fell in love with basketball watching the BG boys more than 40 years ago.

It's time for the Hall of Fame to recognize them.

Dodger fan pulling for Bucs

As a longtime fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, going back to the days when they were still in Brooklyn, and seeing the current organization in bankruptcy, I am sitting off to the side and admiring what the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization has achieved thus far this baseball season.

My feeling is they will break their streak of 18 straight losing seasons this year. Manager Clint Hurdle and his staff have done an outstanding job with this young team despite the injuries. The players' confidence is growing game by game.

So Pirate faithful, keep pulling for your team, get behind them in attendance and smile!
