Health South opens new patient wing

July 9, 2011
From Mirror staff reports , The Altoona Mirror

HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altoona will begin accepting patients on Sunday in its new northeast wing.

The new wing includes nine rooms with 18 beds and brings the hospital's bed capacity to 80 licensed beds.

The hospital's private room capacity has been increased from four to 12 rooms, said George Berger, controller.

The $1.5 million project began in January.

"We were seeing an increase in volume. We have been averaging 65 patients a day and we felt we could use the additional beds," Berger said. "The average stay of our patients is 14 days."

The new rooms were designed with the patient in mind.

"These are bigger rooms with private showers and piped-in oxygen, which gives the patients more room if they need a wheelchair. They also offer several other personal amenities," Berger said.
