Daniel V. Altiero

Daniel V. Altiero, 80, Hollidaysburg, passed away Tuesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Pasquale and Angelina (Possumato) Altiero. He married Shirley K. Hoover.

Surviving are his wife; four sons: Daniel Jr., Richard, Robert and Patrick; four stepchildren: Randy and Daren Brubaker, Cynthia Scott and Karen Wilson; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Vicky of Bellefonte; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Philip and Dominic.

Mr. Altiero was a graduate of Altoona High School and he attended Penn State University. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in the Korean War and fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He received six Bronze Stars, three U.S. Presidential Unit Citations and six Korean Presidential Unit Citations.

He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altoona, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Daniel enjoyed gardening.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home (www.santellafuneralhome.com) and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday, June 24, 2011, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altoona, officiated by Pastors Thomas Ekstrand and Robert Monahan.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In memory of Daniel, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
