HERSHEY - Peter Riley's quest for a second straight PIAA Class AA singles tennis championship ended abruptly on Friday.
Riley, a Northern Bedford County High School senior competing for Tussey Mountain, dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) decision to Hickory senior Corey Runyan, the District 10 champ, in the first round of the PIAA tournament at Hershey Racquet Club.
The loss was Riley's first singles setback since he competed in the state tournament his sophomore season.
The Tussey Mountain doubles team of Joram Schrama and Thomas Keifman also lost in the first round Friday, falling to Fairview's Jimmy Fitzgibbon and Ryan Rothman, 6-0, 6-2.
Gadowsky to start
UNIVERSITY PARK -Penn State men's ice hockey coach Guy Gadowsky and his staff will coach the Penn State Icers in the 2011-12 season, their final year of American Collegiate Hockey Association competition.
Current Icer head coach Scott Balboni has agreed to step down as coach so that Gadowsky and his staff can begin to coach the current team and evaluate the players and 2011 recruits for the future varsity team.
Volleyball stars named
STATE COLLEGE - Altoona's Jeremy Swartz, Phil Servello and Mitchell Snyder were placed on the Mid-State Boys Volleyball All-Star Team.
Huntingdon's Trevor Mitchell and Nick Scalia, Central's Andy Claycomb and Bishop Guilfoyle's Brian Logue also received the honor.
Other members of the team include Kody Johnson and Jude Schrift of Forest Hills, and Patrick Moore, Daniel Pons, Maxwell Sutterlin and Evan Hummer of State College.
Mustangs honored
PORTAGE - Portage's Emily Chobany in girls track, Shane Tarachko, Jalen Noel, David Adams and Dean Bimle in boys track, Ashleigh Kissell, Emily McCabe and Kaitlyn Dividock in softball, and Andrew Maul, Evan Price and Michael Pocola in baseball earned WestPAC all-conference honors.
Erlichman added
Sara Erlichman, a Bedford resident, will be giving softball lessons throughout the summer at the Summit Tennis & Athletic Club.
Erlichman is a Mercersburg Academy graduate and a current McDaniel College pitcher. As a freshman, Erlichman led McDaniel in innings pitched and strikeouts and was named second-team all-Centennial Conference.
"We are so pleased to have such a fine person and softball starlet,'' Summit baseball/softball director Chris Cacciotti said. "Since she is only a freshman, we look forward to her being with us four at least four years.''
