Shriners to begin hospital crusade

May 19, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

The members of Jaffa Shrine will once again be distributing their newspaper-style tabloids for the annual Shrine Hospital Crusade on June 3 and 4.

The purpose of the hospital crusade is to inform the public throughout Pennsylvania of the health care services provided by the Shrine Hospitals.

The tabloid depicts stories of children from across the state treated in the Shriners' Orthopedic and Burn Hospitals.

The tabloids also give instructions on how to contact the Shrine about getting help for a crippled or burned child.

This treatment is available to all children up to the age of 18, at the Shriners 19 orthopedic and three burn hospitals located throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Shriner's Hospitals are open to children regardless of their race, religion or relationship to a Shriner.

Across North America, Shriners Hospitals for Children offer some of the best orthopedic, spinal cord injury rehabilitation and burn care available to children who are in need. Because of the Shrine fraternity's commitment to the "World's Greatest Philanthropy" over the past 80 years, more than 835,000 children have received medical care available at the 22 Shrine Hospitals.

The total Shriners Hospitals budget for 2011 is $826 million dollars. The hospitals are able to dedicate 93 percent of their budget for patient care and research.

Jaffa Shriners from Blairsville to Lewistown, and from the New York to Maryland state line will be participating in this annual crusade. You will see them at shopping centers, malls, banks, grocery and department stores.

When you see the Shriners out, during crusade weekend, wearing the familiar red fez, be sure to stop and get a free copy of the hospital tabloid. Read about the work of the Shriners Hospitals. Then, maybe you will know of a child that is in need of orthopedic or burn care and you can contact the Shriners.

Anyone wishing to make contributions to the Shriners Hospitals may do so during crusade weekend or by contacting the Jaffa Shrine at P.O. Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16603. Individuals or businesses donating $100 or more will receive a beautiful walnut finished engraved Shriners Hospitals Plaque. For more information on the Shriners Hospital call the Jaffa Recorders Office at 944-4043 or 800-523-3211.
