Endress to chase history at District 6 track meet

May 18, 2011
From Mirror reports , The Altoona Mirror

While all the competitors at Mansion Park on Thursday for the District 6 Class AAA Track and Field Championships will be looking for a berth in next week's state meet at Shippensburg University, Altoona's Wade Endress will be chasing history.

Endress, the Mountain Lions' Penn State-bound distance runner, is in a position to break records that have stood for 30 years in the meet's 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs if he can meet his seeded times in those events. Bob Hudson of State College currently holds both marks.

Endress is also seeded first in the 3,200 and is part of Altoona's top-seeded relay teams in the 3,200 and 1,600. Performers can only compete in four events, however.

The meet gets under way at 3:45 p.m.

Led by Endress, Altoona owns the top seed in 12 of the 18 boys events.

Mountain Lion DeRon Lee is the No. 1 seed in the triple jump and the 200 meters and also is part of the top-seeded 400 relay. Meanwhile, Rafeeq Barnes has the best seeding time in the 100, Tyler Mandley can say the same in the 300 hurdles, Kevin Johnson is the favorite in the long jump, and Ryan Steinbugl is the competitor to beat in the pole vault.

Mandley also is seven-hundredths of a second off the pace as the second seed in the 300 hurdles.

On the girls side, Altoona's Nikki Kerns is poised to qualify for states in multiple events. She heads into the meet seeded first and having achieved the qualifying result in the 300 hurdles and the high jump and seeded second in the 100 hurdles.

Looking to join her are Lady Lion teammates Kelly Davis, Makenzie Wilt and Abby Wagner. Davis is the No. 1 seed in the 100 and second in the 200. Wilt is the top seed in the discus. Wagner, while seeded second in the long jump, has a top distance this year just 1 inch shy of the state qualifying mark.
