Mounties, Mustangs get No. 2 seeds

May 17, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

From Mirror reports

Philipsburg-Osceola, Portage, Hollidaysburg and Central on Monday received the highest seeds among area teams entering the District 6 baseball playoffs.

The district released its pairings for games in classes AAA through A. The tournament opens Thursday with first round games in Class AA and Class A.

Philipsburg-Osceola garnered the second seed in Class AA through a rating formula, while Portage is the No. 2 team in the Class A bracket. Both the Mounties and Mustangs will receive byes into the Monday's quarterfinals, as will Central, the third seed in Class AAA.

Hollidaysburg won't get a first-round bye, but the Golden Tigers won't be in action until Monday, either. The Tigers are the No. 3 seed in the seven-team Class AAA field; they host sixth-seeded Forest Hills in their opener.

Ten area teams swing into action on Monday, including four Class A squads against each other: Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic travels to Bishop Carroll, while Juniata Valley hosts Claysburg-Kimmel in rematches from the regular season.
