It's been a good spring for boys track and field athletes from northern Blair County, and the District 6 Class AA Track and Field Championships are shaping up to be a huge day for them as well.
Tyrone's Nick Patton is seeded first in two individual sprints and as part of a relay team for the event, which is scheduled for Tuesday at Mansion Park beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Bellwood-Antis - led by Brian Leap - should be in strong contention for the boys team title with 10 top-three seeds.
The top eight places score points. The top three finishers in each event along with anyone achieving a predetermined qualifying mark will advance to the PIAA championships May 27-28 at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium.
Patton was the gold medalist in the 200-meter dash and the silver medalist in the 400 at last year's state meet, and he is favored to win both those events and possibly to challenge for 6-AA records. Tyrone also is the No. 1 seed in the 400 relay and second in the 1,600 relay, both of which Patton is a part.
Leap, meanwhile, will set a new meet record in the triple jump if he can reproduce his season-best of 47 feet, 11 inches on Tuesday; the current mark is 47-4. Leap runs the anchor on the top-seeded Blue Devil 1,600 relay and is seeded second in the high and triple jumps, as well.
Leap's teammate, Deryck Montgomery, meanwhile, is the favorite in the 800 run.
Three other area boys are seeded first: Central's Derek Nothstein in the javelin and Dan Hoover in the 110 hurdles and Tyrone's Robert Huff in the 300 hurdles. Nothstein is a defending state medalist. Hoover also is ranked second in the 300 hurdles.
Forest Hills' Luke Gallaher is the only other boy with multiple No. 1 seedings. The defending Class AA state champion in the high jump, Gallaher is first in that event in addition to the long jump. He's also second in the 200.
Philipsburg-Osceola's Alison Patrick and Huntingdon's Bethany Ledford are the two area girls with the best seedings and best chance to move on to states in multiple events from Tuesday's meet. Ledford is a big favorite in the pole vault and is tied with Bishop Guiloyle's Kate Meck and Forest Hills' Kelly Beyer for the top position in the high jump.
Patrick is seeded first in the long jump, second in the 200 dash and 400 and is part of a Lady Mountie 1,600 relay team that is ranked second.
Penn Cambria's Jess Delic has far and away the best seeding distance in the javelin. Central Cambria's 3,200 relay team rounds out the top girls seeds from the area.
However, it's possible that several other area girls could be seeded higher come Tuesday. Homer-Center's Angel Piccirillo, the defending state champion in the mile and third-place finisher in the half-mile is the favorite in four races - the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 - and it's conceivable that she could scratch out of one or two of them. In addition to Patrick in the 400, Central Cambria's Kendall Seymour is the second seed to in the two-mile run, and Seymour's Lady Red Devil teammate, Ashley Stump, is the third seed in half-mile.
P-O 300 hurdler Ashton Wasilko and Northern Cambria triple jumper Ashley Kirsch are the area's other second seeds.
