The Mirror is seeking nominations for awards to be presented at the sixth annual Athlete of the Year banquet Monday, May 23.
Area high schools are invited to submit nominations for the Ron Rickens Sportsmanship Awards as well as the Erin Johnson Award, which recognizes the area high school athlete who has overcome the most adversity.
Only seniors are eligible.
The Rickens Awards, which honors a deserving male and female athlete, are presented in memory of former local coach and referee Ron Rickens, who stood for sportsmanship. Nominations of area student-athletes should include supportive examples of sportsmanship, leadership, academic excellence and community service.
The Johnson Award was named for and will be presented by Erin (Johnson) Kelly, who despite being born without a left forearm scored 1,000 career points at Claysburg-Kimmel High School and also played basketball at Penn State Altoona.
Nominations should be sent to Mirror Managing Editor Neil Rudel by May 2.
The banquet will be held at The Casino at Lakemont and will honor all 2010-11 Athletes of the Week in addition to announcing the Mirror's 2011 Athletes of the Year.
