Defensive tackle is considered one of the primary areas of need in Penn State's 2012 football recruiting class, and the Nittany Lions got a verbal commitment on Sunday to help address it.
Jamil Pollard, a 6-foot-4, 280-pounder from West Deptford, N.J., has become the fifth prospect to announce his intention to sign with the Lions, several websites reported.
Pollard had 58 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles and three batted-down passes as a junior. He was named first-team all-South Jersey by the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Cherry Hill Courier Post.
Alabama, Florida, Rutgers and Iowa were among the other colleges to offer scholarships, but Penn State was reputed to be a big favorite in recent weeks.
