VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Penn Cambria's Evan Link went 3-0 Saturday to make the 112-pound finals of the NHSCA Senior National Wrestling Championships at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Link defeated California's Ian Nickell, 9-2, in the semifinals to advance to today's 5 p.m. finals against two-time California state champion Nahshon Garrett, who beat Massachusetts' Jonathan Costa, 11-4, in the semis.
Link, the two-time PIAA Class AA runner-up and 2011 Mirror Wrestler of the Year, reached the semifinals with a pin of Washington's Andrew Vulliet in 1:27 and a 5-3 decision over Utah's Gerritt Bradley in the quarterfinals. Friday, he opened with a pin of Maryland's Matt Laux in 5:29.
"He's wrestling great," Penn Cambria coach Todd Niebauer said. "In the quarterfinals, the kid slowed him down, but Evan dominated. In his first match, he was winning 17-4 when he pinned the kid. [Again Vulliet] he was winning 7-1."
Niebauer said he's looking forward to the finals.
"They have two different styles," he said. "I think it's going to be a great match."
Link's teammate, Tom Hanlon, was eliminated in his first consolation bout when he was pinned by New Jersey's Brian Beisel in 3:50.
