With the track and field season under way, area high school athletes have already begun their quest for not only a trip to the District 6 and District 5 meets in May, but a trip to the state championships in Shippensburg later that month.
Altoona and Tyrone return several competitors who made the trek to Seth Grove Stadium in 2010. The Mountain Lions, who were the Class AAA state champions in 2010, have Wade Endress (distance), DeRon Lee and Kevin Johnson (jumps), Ryan Steinbugl (pole vault) and Tyler Lidwell (relays) back. Tyrone returns its 400 relay team that consists of Nick Patton - who won gold and silver in the 200 and 400, respectively, on his own, along with his relay teammates Zach Burke, Derrick Emigh and Steve Franco.
Other returning athletes who went to states last year include Central's Derek Nothstein (javelin) and Bellwood-Antis' Brian Leap (triple jump).

Strengths: "We have good distance runners with a lot of experience. We have some good depth, with 42 kids on the team, so I think that will definitely be a big help, and we have some good experienced seniors to lead the way. I'm looking to get some of our kids back to districts.''
Concerns: "We lost our top three throwers from last year to graduation. We have to replace them. We were really strong throwing the last three years, but we have to rebuild that area.''
Overall outlook: "I think we have a good group of hard-working boys, and I think we'll have a chance to have a winning season and hopefully, shine in some spots in the districts.''

Strengths: "We should be strong in the hurdles, jumps, middle distance and long distance. We have Chris Foore returning after making a trip to the state track meet last year, as well as some strong returning letter winners and freshmen moving up from junior high."
Concerns: "We don't have a large number of kids in the spring events. There are also a lot of newcomers that lack experience."
Overall outlook: "I hope the older kids are able to lead the newcomers and mesh well as a team. Our goal is to win more meets than last year, and the numbers will help us do that. Some of the kids also have school records in sight as well as returning trips to the state meet."

Overall outlook: "We lost some key positions to graduation. The team has grown, which should help depth in many areas. We have a core group that has big meet experience. The new team members show great potential, but they will need to get some meet experience and develop their skills. Barring injury, we should be well represented again at the district and state meets.
