Future bright for Lady Lions, matmen

March 27, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

I was away and missed seeing Penn State vs. Temple in the NCAA Tournament and as well as the Lady Lions' first game.

But I want to share some comments concerning the fate of the Nittany Lions basketball program. Their goal was to make it to the NCAA Tournament of 68, and this they did accomplish.

They got inside the "front door" and then were rudely kicked out the door - end of season. It took this program 10 years under former head coach Jerry Dunn (2001-2003) and then present coach Ed DeChellis (2003-2011) to get to the NCAAs once again.

Dunn took the Nittany Lions to the NCAAs in March 2001. There existed a decade before this team made it back and lost in the first round with four seniors, including one of the best Big Ten players ever in Talor Battle.

At this point, one has to wonder where does the Nittany Lion men's basketball program go from here?

There is the possibility that DeChellis could realistically come to grips and say I have done my best to get from point A to B and now back to point A and starting right from scratch with nothing.

Maybe he figures it is time to cut the umbilical cord and move on to perhaps a basketball program at a lower level and maybe become more successful as time is running out on him.

It will be interesting to see what develops.

As for the Lady Lions basketball team, they are very young and lose only one senior. So their future under Coquese Washington presents a more positive picture. This team has learned much from their experiences this year and will only get better.

Congratulations to Cael Sanderson and the wrestling team on winning the national championship in only his second year.

Since Pennsylvania, along with Eastern wrestling, provides the best high school wrestling around, I look for Coach Sanderson and the Penn State program to win more Big Ten and NCAA wrestling titles in the years ahead.

Follow wrestling lead in football hire

The leaders at Penn State made a bright move in the hiring of Cael Sanderson as wrestling coach.

If they used the same moves for football, can you imagine the turnaround we would have? With a coach with the style and knowledge of Cale, we would have to make a new stadium.

New blood is needed badly in football.

I hope the leaders soon wake up and do their jobs.
