Baseball preview: State runner-up Central looking for banner season

March 25, 2011
By Michael Boytim, mboytim@altoonamirror.com

Central came within a win of claiming a state championship a year ago, and the Scarlet Dragons are hoping to carry the success into this year's team and produce a similar run in 2011.

"Our league really helps us prepare for the playoffs," Central coach A.J. Hoenstine said. "Our goal is always to compete for the league, district and state championship."

A year ago, even though the Dragons made both the district and state championship game, they won neither.

Hollidaysburg (Class AAAA), Huntingdon (Class AAA) and Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic (Class A) also lost in district championship games a year ago and are hoping to bring home the gold this season.

"Our goal is to improve on last season's record," Huntingdon coach Brian Pelka said. "We hope to improve throughout the season and make a run in the playoffs."

Northern Bedford (Class A) and Bedford (Class AA) won District 5 titles last season. Despite a new coach, NBC is hoping for a repeat.

"We have a strong nucleus returning from last season," Northern Bedford first-year coach David McIlnay said. "Our goals are to contend for a league and district title."
