UNIVERSITY PARK - The Central Cambria High School swim team got its first state qualifier in eight years on Saturday as Kelsie Conrad qualified with her performance in the 100-yard backstroke at the District 6-9 Class AA championships at Penn State.
Conrad, a junior, took third with a time of 1:03.23. The top three in Class AA advance to states, which will be held at Bucknell University on March 16-17.
"She dropped four seconds from her seeded time," said coach Ann Risaliti. "After the second turn, I knew she had it."
Conrad also took 11th in the 100 freestyle (1:00.16).
On the boys side, Blake Bussard missed going to states by .15 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. He finished in 1:04.08, a school record.
The boys team, which finished seventh in the team standings, the highest ever for Central Cambria at districts, also got a sixth-place medal from the 400 relay team. Alex Chiappini, Kole Newcomer, Sasha Pennington and Bussard finished in 3:39.27.
