UNIVERSITY PARK - Danielle Parowski and Mace Long both had solid outings at the District 6-9 Class AAA swimming championships Friday, which qualified the two for a trip to states in two weeks at Bucknell University.
Parowski, a junior from Altoona, is headed back to Bucknell after a record day in the 200 freestyle. She won the event in 1:51.95. The previous record was 1:53.53.
"She was awesome," Altoona coach Andy Smearman said. "She broke the district record and also set a new school record. She won by a landslide. It was an eight-lap race and by the first 25 [yards], all the other girls were at her toes."
Long, a freshman from Hollidaysburg, won the 100 butterfly in 54.82, which was a personal best and a new school record.
"He has excelled in that event all year," Hollidaysburg coach Deb Solomon said. "I knew he had the best time going in. He did his job [Friday]. He had awesome turns and fast turns off the wall. He was just nonstop."
Altoona's Alex Cummings finished second in the 200 IM at 2:00.07. It was seven seconds better than his best time this year. He could still get in to states after the required 16 get in on district bids. After that, the next 16 best times this weekend will be picked and Smearman feels he has a real shot.
"He was phenomenal [Friday] and he charged for the lead against guys who were seeded ahead of him," the coach said. "It was the nicest 200 IM I have seen him swim in his career."
Hollidaysburg's Sarah Kaneshiki is in the same situation in the 200 freestyle, where she finished behind Parowski in 1:56.31.
"Sarah had a nice swim, she did a nice job. Danielle was just phenomenal," said Solomon, who will be checking all the state times on Sunday to see if Kaneshiki returns to states for a fourth year.
Altoona had two other swimmers place, but not qualify on Friday. Maria Thompson took fifth in the 50 freestyle in 26.68, while Anna Bistline finished sixth in the 200 IM in 2:41.31.
Hollidaysburg had several second-place finishes Friday. The boys 200 medley team - Long, Mark Colapietro, Ben Crownover and Luke Roberts - set a school record with a time of 1:42.21. The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Long, Ben Rosser, Dan Henderson and Roberts finished in 1:33.96.
Sarah Robbins finished the 100 butterfly in 59.93, a school record and a personal best.
"It is something that she has wanted to do her whole career," Solomon said.
The 200 medley relay team of Megan Keefer, Megan Grassadonia, Robbins and Kaneshiki finished in 1:56.85.
The Lady Tigers also had one third-place honor The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Robbins, Keefer, Grassadonia and Kaneshiki finished in 1:44.78.
In the Class AA competition, Cambria Heights senior Nick Galczynski qualified for states in the 100 butterfly, taking second with a time of 56.78. The time was both a personal best and a school record.
"Once he did his last turn ... once he hit it, the last 25 yards he just flew out there," Heights coach Valerie Galczynski said of her son, who is making his first trip to states in four years of varsity swimming. "After that turn, I thought he'd make top three but to get second ... it was pretty exciting."
Central did not have anyone qualify for states, but did get two placewinners.
Drake Dodson finished fifth in the 50 freestyle in 22.94.
"He was less than half a second from third place," said Central coach Amanda Herr, noting that the top three qualify for states in Class AA. "The top 6 were all within a second of each other. It was a pretty tight race. They were all right in there."
The Central boys 200 medley relay team of Drake Dodson, Brock Dodson, Tyler Clark and Ian Haffling took sixth in 1:54.55.
