Nursing home death ruled a homicide

Police continue investigation

February 15, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

EBENSBURG -- A Cambria Care Center resident has died after police said he was beaten by another resident, and the Cambria County Coroner's Office has ruled the death a homicide.

Theodore Shaw, 70, died from a head injury -- likely from being struck more than once by a door, Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said Tuesday.

An autopsy showed Shaw, pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m. Monday, also had bruising all over his body from the beating, Kwiatkowski said.

His alleged attacker, Ray F. Dunmyer Jr., 78, was a fellow Cambria Care Center nursing home resident and dementia floor patient, according to Mark Fox, spokesman for Grane Healthcare, the facility's operator.

Fox said nursing home staff and administrators are in shock over the incident, saying Dunmyer was not a problem resident, and that such occurrences "have never happened before" in one of the system's five secure "memory-impaired" units across the region.

State police have charged Dunmyer with aggravated assault -- a felony -- but it was unclear if his charges could be amended.

Mirror reporters are working on a story for Wednesday's Mirror.
