Farm vehicles not part of regulations

November 1, 2010
The Altoona Mirror

Legislation by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau aimed at excluding local agricultural vehicles and their drivers from recent federal commercial trucking standards was approved last month as part of a transportation bill.

According to the Farm Bureau, the legislation removes state authority to impose federal trucking standards on farm vehicles weighing 26,000 pounds or less as well as farm machinery designed and used for off-road use.

The original changes came about as a result of a 2007 audit from federal transportation officials and limited who could drive vehicles and how those vehicles had to be registered or insured and also increased the amount of paperwork necessary for operation.
