Check back here for updates from Joe Paterno's press conference ...
On the quarterbacks: "Well, obviously, there's a lot of inexperience right now. There isn't anybody who's played much. We've gotta make up our mind ... We'll probably make up our mind in the next day or two as to who we'll start, but we'll play a couple kids."
On Andrew Szczerba's injury: "It's not good. He hasn't practiced one play. I don't know when they're gonna let him go. It bothered him in high school and he just can't do it. And he's trying. We've already redshirted him. It's not a question of redshirting him. It's just a question whether we can get him ready."
On waiting to name a QB: "I don't know how late we've been relative to where we are with this kids. I'd like to make a decision so they feel comfortable and one of them gets in there to see what he can do. Every one of the four kids out there have potential. Every one has a chance to be pretty good. But none of them have any experience. ... We're playing it by ear day by day, and that's one of the reasons we're so late in making a selection."
On the freshman quarterbacks: "I've seen some potential in the young quarterbacks. But none of them have any real game experience. I have no idea what to expect from them in a ball game. The two youngest of the four young ones, we've gotta see what happens. But we're gonna have to play it by ear. We really are just, we have some kids we really like and think are gonna be good, and there's more than one. But at this stage, I couldn't tell you who's going to come to the front."
On Morris and Powell: "Powell's a gifted kid. He has to do two things: No. 1, he has to be a little more consistent in what he does. He has a tendency to drift away as far as concentration. And the other thing is he has to stay healthy."
On Powell: "He's an offensive player. I hope he does a lot of different things. I don't think anybody these days is just a receiver. Everybody's throwing out that little quick screen in the flat, you gotta be a good runner. You gotta block."
On Mauti: "Mauti's fine. I don't think he missed a day. We've got at least five, maybe six kids who are good athletes and could be good linebackers. There's a couple a little bit behind where they have to be in order to handle some of the situations they're going to face."
On a situational quarterback: "I don't know what we're gonna do with the quarterbacks. Period. And I think that'll end the discussion. I'm getting tired of talking about it. They lack the quarterback experience you'd like to see when we're playing the schedule we're playing."
On Powell again: "We moved him because we got some people bumped up. Green's hurt some. Drake's banged up. We needed somebody over there who could do some of the things those guys could do. Right now Chaz is back to learning because we've changed the offense some. We've had to make some adjustments, and Powell's working his way into that."
On Still: "I think Still's a good football player Big kid, he works hard. He's had a good preseason, a good spring, I think he played well last year. Still's a good player, and he's had a good preseason."
On offensive line: "I don't think that's gonna have a lot to do with what we decide to do with the quarterbacks. I think what we do is gonna depend on the quarterbacks. We're trying to keep it to where they're comfortable and they can get some things going."
On captains: "We selected captains two days ago. Ogbu's the defensive captain and Brackett's the offensive captain. That's a vote by the players."
On the first string cornerbacks: "The two corners would be Morris and Lynn."
On whether all three quarterbacks could play: "I don't know. I'm trying to give you some insight as to exactly what we're thinking. We're trying to not put too much pressure on any single one of them. We're trying not to go out there and say we're gonna do this, we're gonna do that. Even the Jones kid, who we tentatively decided to redshirt, they can all do different things."
On Jones: "Jones had a bad start academically. They're all pretty close. They can move, they can throw the football, they all have good motions. It's just a question now, one of these days everybody has to come together and this is the team. We're not there yet."
On Jones' academics: "He did alright, but I'm a little nervous about it."
On special teams: "Obviously, that's going to be very important. There again, I think we're solid at placekicker. The punter, we'll probably start Fera, who had been a kicker when we recruited him. I think we're gonna be alright there."
On Green: "He has a little bit of a neck injury, kind of a carry over from high school."
On whether he could play: "We'll have to see this week."
On being on the field: "I haven't missed one play in practice and I don't intend to miss any games."
On the team's leadership: "There again, until we get in a situation where things aren't going right, somebody walks into the huddle and says c'mon, let's get this thing Until we have guys respond to some adversity, it's very tough to know what kind of leadership we're gonna have. I think we're gonna have good leadership."
On Royster: "Evan Royster is a little heavy. He's about 220. I keep telling him he's not gonna have the kind of endurance he needs unless he loses some weight. But he knows what's going on, and he's a good back. I think he's one step away from a little more intensity from being better than good."
On the backup tight ends: "They haven't had a chance to do much. There's so much to learn. Gilliam at one time we thought was going to be a defensive end. Szczerba's been hurt not only in preseason practice, he was hurt in the winter program. We thought he would be OK."
On the interior of the line: "I think they've worked hard, as I've said earlier. We've made a lot of improvement. Eliades has been hurt a little. He's missed a couple days, but he's been OK. As of now, we're encouraged. We're not home free yet. We go out there and sometimes we have some problems. But overall we've made strides."
