Charles J. Turiano, 86, Altoona, died Monday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center.
He was born in Tyrone, son of Vincenzo and Josephine (Lombardo) Turiano. He married Julia A. Szczerba June 2, 1949, in Huntingdon. She died Sept. 7, 2004.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathyann T. Brown and husband, Terry, of Sinking Valley; a son, Michael V. and fiancee, Bonnie Blair, of Sinking Valley; and four grandchildren: Michael II and Troy Turiano and Chyna Rose and Tristin Michael Brown.
He was the last of his immediate family, being preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Murphy; a grandson, Ryan Murphy; six brothers; and four sisters.
Charlie was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving as a staff sergeant and paratrooper with the 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 82nd Airborne Division in central Europe. He retired in 1979 from Acme Markets as district superintendent after 40 years of service. He was owner of Westinghouse Laundromats for many years.
He was a life member of the Tyrone VFW and Tyrone Elks and a member of the Tyrone American Legion, Altoona Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 51, Deep Well Hunting Club and Lakemont Park Citizens Advisory Council.
Charlie enjoyed his Gibsons, singing, hunting, woodworking and cooking. He fondly is remembered by his children, grandchildren and friends as kind, loving, compassionate and generous.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Monsignor Robert Mazur as celebrant. Entombment with veteran's service will be provided by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
