Altoona volleyball wins own tourney

The Altoona boys volleyball team hosted the Junior Rally in the Valley tournament on Saturday at the Fieldhouse, where the Mountain Lions beat Forest Hills, 25-17, 25-19, for the title.

Altoona went 8-0 in pool play. Forest Hills, which went 3-5 in pool play, upset 6-2 DuBois in the semifinals to get to the title matchup. Altoona knocked off Bishop Guilfoyle (2-6) by scores of 25-10, 25-8 in the semifinals. Central, which lost 25-20 to Guilfoyle in the championship bracket, went 1-7 in pool play.

Mitch Snyder led Altoona, now 12-0 overall on the season, with 49 service points and 50 digs, while Brandon McGarvey added 77 assists. Thad Frank added 22 blocks to go with 34 kills from Clay Gingrich.

Lady Lions second

MILL HALL - Altoona made it to the title game of the Central Mountain Tournament on Saturday, only to fall to Clearfield, 4-2, in high school softball action.

Altoona beat Central Mountain, 8-7, with four runs in the seventh in the semifinals. Didi Rizzo tripled, homered and drove in three runs. Teammate Kayla Montgomery added two hits and an RBI.

In the finals, Altoona got only five hits and committed five errors as it fell to 2-7.

Field to be dedicated

There will be a small dedication ceremony for the newly-named Dick Bickel Field at Garfield Park (25th Street, 11th Ave.) today at 11 a.m.

The dedication ceremony is being conducted by the Sunday Softball Leagues that utilize Garfield Park, and is honoring the late Bickel, who was a long-time umpire in those leagues.

Following the dedication, the Dalton Dobbins Softball League will kick off its 2010 season with its first game of the year. For more information about the league or ceremony, log on to www.dobbinsleague.com.

Lady Tigers triumph

Hollidaysburg won the Bishop Guilfoyle Junior High Volleyball tournament by defeating Richland in the Gold bracket finals, 25-16, 20-25, 15-12.

Hollidaysburg split with Spring Cove, 26-24, 19-25, defeated Bishop Carroll, 25-19, 25-20, defeated North Star, 25-17, 26-24, defeated Mount Nittany, 25-18, 25-13, and defeated Cambria Heights in the semifinals of the Gold Bracket, 25-9.

Rachel Sibold had 32 service points and 23 kills, Megan Daisley had 31 service points and 34 assists, Sarah Kordish had 19 kills and Allison Matko had 25 service points for the Lady Tigers.

Bishop Carroll won the silver bracket, defeating North Star 25-11, 25-19. Allison Przybys had 13 service points, Nicole Woomer had 11 service points, Sarah Gomish had nine kills, and Jess Shaffer had 12 assists in the Bishop Carroll victory.

Bishop Carroll defeated Bellwood-Antis, 25-10, in the semifinals with seven service points from Przybys, five kills from Gomish, and 10 assists from Shaffer. The Lady Huskies went 5-3 in pool play, defeating Mount Nittany 15-16, 25-20; Spring Cove 25-15, and North Star 25-18, 25-20. The team lost to Hollidaysburg 19-25, 20-25, and Spring Cove 23-25.

Bishop Carroll's girls' junior high varsity team is now 11-7 for the season.

Anderson repeats

PHILIPSBURG - Al Anderson teamed with Tiger Woods to card a 137 and win the Masters Tournament net division at the Philipsburg Country Club for the second year in a row last Sunday.

Members' scores were combined with golfers playing in the Masters.

Greg Baughman and Fred Couples (138) finished second, while Kevin Hahn and K.J. Choi (139) placed third. Craig Myers and Woods (140) finished fourth.

Scott Nelson and Anthony Kim won the gross division with a 140. Jeff Miller and Phil Mickelson (143) finished second, while Tom Dunsmore and Hunter Mahan (148) took third. Al Pettina and Ian Poulter (155) placed fourth.

On March 31, Jim Burns carded a hole-in-one on the 130-yard fourth hole with a 7 iron. He was playing with Ken Vancas, Cecil Conklin and Doug Detwiler.
