Giger's take: DeChellis needs to go JUCO route

Commentary

By Cory Giger, cgiger@altoonamirror.com

Chris Babb was a major disappointment this season, averaging just 9.3 points on 37 percent shooting, and losing him isn't as big of a blow as some Penn State faithful may think. The departures of Babb and three others who barely contributed could work out great for Ed DeChellis as he desperately tries to hang on to his job.

Penn State now has three scholarships available, while a fourth will go to incoming freshman Taran Buie. DeChellis must go the junior college route - like he did with former Lion?Stanley Pringle - and bring in two or three quality players who can help immediately. It can be dangerous bringing in often-suspect JUCO kids, especially at a great academic institution like Penn State. But DeChellis needs to gamble a bit and do whatever it takes to win next season.

DeChellis has one more year left with one of the best players in program history, and he has to surround Talor Battle with better talent. The coach should be able to find a better scorer than Babb who simply wants a chance to showcase himself, along with a big guy inside who's better than the disappointing Andrew Jones.

JUCO players might come with some baggage, but if they help it could prevent DeChellis from having to pack his bags next year.
