Lenten Box 'Bach' Concert Series

Altoona East End churches join to present sacred musical selections in a religious setting

Six churches from the East End of town are working together to offer the Lenten Box "Bach" Concert Series at Second Avenue United Methodist Church, Altoona.

From noon to 12:25 p.m., lunch will be offered in the downstairs social hall, followed by a thought-for-the-day and a prayer from one of the participating ministers.

At 12:30 p.m., the concerts begin upstairs in the sanctuary. The concert series allows anyone to meditate while performers share their musical gifts.

Jennifer Harry and Asa W. Carns take a break Wednesday from rehearsals for their Feb. 24 Lenten performance at Second Avenue United Methodist Church, 130 Second Ave., Altoona. Six area churches will participate in the Lenten Box “Bach” Concert Series held at the church.

People on a tight schedule are permitted to bring a bag lunch to eat during the concert.

Prelude music begins at 12:15 for anyone not able to be there by noon to have soup.

The concert schedule is as follows:

Wednesday: Asa W. Carns, organ and piano reflections with Jennifer Harry performing liturgical dance.

Carns is choir and bells director and organist at Second Avenue United Methodist.

Harry is the church's discipleship coordinator.

March 3: The Rev. Betty Landis, soprano, accompanied by Carns.

March 10: Judy Moore, flute, accompanied by Carns. Moore specializes in music of the Baroque period and directs the State College area flute choir. She performs on a baroque flute with the Penn State Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Junior Baroque series.

Moore has published several arrangements for flute and keyboard. She will perform two of those arrangements: "Andante" from Piano Concerto No. 21 by Mozart and "Allegro Assai" from Brandenberg Concerto No. 2 by Bach, with Carns during the Lenten series.

March 17: Duets with Betty Wingert, piano, and Carns, organ.

March 24: Jim White, baritone, accompanied by Carns.

March 31: Leslie Beers with Suzuki Strings, and Carns.

Other participating churches are Bethany Lutheran, Fifth Avenue United Methodist, Greenwood United Methodist, East End United Methodist and Jaggard United Methodist.
