Police: Man throws burning leaves into gas tank

Water floating on gas prevents explosion

By Greg Bock, gbock@altoonamirror.com
POSTED: November 24, 2009

HOLLIDAYSBURG - A Hollidaysburg-area man is free on $5,000 unsecured bail after borough police said he tried to blow up an Allegheny Street gas station's storage tanks.

Michael Thomas Henry, 28, of Box 130, Hollidaysburg RR 1, allegedly grabbed a handful of dried leaves, lit them on fire, and tossed them into the opening of one of Patel Sunoco's three 13,000-gallon underground storage tanks.

Police said they found burnt leaves floating on top of a skim of water on top of the gasoline in the tank and that a large explosion would have devastated the neighborhood.

Nick Patel, the gas station owner, said it's unusual that water infiltrates the tank, and the business was closed at the time of the incident, at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He said the tank had about 5,000 gallons of gasoline with enough fumes to cause a substantial explosion.

Hollidaysburg police responded to a 911 call and found Henry rolling on the ground in the parking lot, a lighter by his side, court documents state. Henry reportedly said he was stabbed, although police saw no visible injuries and Henry ultimately refused treatment when an ambulance arrived.

Henry had been in an argument with several people across the street and ran to the gas station parking lot and removed the lid to one of the underground storage tanks, court documents state. It was then that he tried to blow up the tank with the burning leaves and even threw the lid toward a car that pulled into the gas station's parking lot.

Henry is charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled today before Magisterial District Judge Paula Aigner.

I think they should throw him in a mental institution and throw away the key. Mikey has mental problem and this isn't the first time he has done some crazy stuff like this. If the DA allows him to be released this time, whatever happens after this should be on his/her head!!!

Yeah, so the car he threw it at was mine and I <along w/ my entire household and neighboorhood> wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for GOD. This man was demon possessed and just like the Bible says "the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy." His plan was murder. Lets face it - this man had everything he needed to blow up Hollidaysburg. But God had a bigger plan - life and life abundant! It was truely the grace and LOVE of God that has kept us alive. This is the REAL story. Thank you Lord <3

Lots of fumes displaced the air in the tank- no oxygen to burn the fumes. Lack of O2 probably even extinguished the burning leaves.

I hear you F16- There had to have been a whole lot of water in that tank to keep the fumes down. Wonder how all that water got into a sealed tank (Nick??)?

I don't know about this story. The fumes should have ignited regardless if water was between the source of flame and the gasoline. Sounds like that particular batch would be good for clogging a fuel filter and not much else...

$5,000! Why such a high bail??? All the guy tried to do was blow up half of Hollidaysburg. How can he afford to buy more matches???

I'm not sure you can blow a tank up that way. I guess that's one for Mythbusters.

Last time I checked, water is more dense than gasoline. That wasn't water "floating" on top of the gas.

A couple questions here: How can somebody just walk up and so easily take those covers off to expose an open underground gas tank? Aren't they secured on somehow? If they aren't, wouldn't any idiot be able to put any type of foreign object/substance down there? And how did water get in the tanks? I'd look for your business to considerably drop off there Nick. Nobody's gonna pay $2.69 a gallon to put all that crap in their vehicle.
